Significant methane undersaturation during austral summer in the Ross Sea (Southern Ocean)

چکیده
Methane (CH4) is a climate-relevant trace gas that emitted from the open and coastal oceans in considerable amounts. However, its distribution remote oceanic areas largely unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, dissolved CH4 was measured at nine stations 75°S Ross Sea during austral summer January 2020. undersaturation (mean: 82 ± 20%) found throughout water column. In subsurface waters, of mainly resulted mixing masses situ consumption, whereas concentrations surface mixed layer were driven by air–sea exchange diapycnal diffusion between layers, as well consumption CH4. With mean flux density −0.44 0.34 μmol m−2 d−1, substantial sink for atmospheric summer, which contrast with most regions, are known sources.

Phytoplankton blooms during austral summer in the Ross Sea, Antarctica: Driving factors and trophic implications
During the austral summer of 2014, an oceanographic cruise was conducted in the Ross Sea in the framework of the RoME (Ross Sea Mesoscale Experiment) Project. Forty-three hydrological stations were sampled within three different areas: the northern Ross Sea (RoME 1), Terra Nova Bay (RoME 2), and the southern Ross Sea (RoME 3). The ecological and photophysiological characteristics of the phytopl...
متن کاملExploring the Link between Micronutrients and Phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean during the 2007 Austral Summer
Bottle assays and large-scale fertilization experiments have demonstrated that, in the Southern Ocean, iron often controls the biomass and the biodiversity of primary producers. To grow, phytoplankton need numerous other trace metals (micronutrients) required for the activity of key enzymes and other intracellular functions. However, little is known of the potential these other trace elements h...
متن کاملSea surface pCO2 and O2 in the Southern Ocean during the austral fall, 2008
[1] The physical and biological processes controlling surface mixed layer pCO2 and O2 were evaluated using in situ sensors mounted on a Lagrangian drifter deployed in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean (∼50°S, ∼37°W) during the austral fall of 2008. The drifter was deployed three times during different phases of the study. The surface ocean pCO2 was always less than atmospheric pCO2 (−50...
متن کاملAlbedo of summer snow on sea ice, Ross Sea, Antarctica
[1] Surface all-wave albedo and physical parameters (grain radius, mass density, surface temperature, and stratification) of an austral summer snow cover on sea ice were measured in the Ross Sea during January-February 1999. It was observed that (1) from north to south the snow surface temperature decreases, albedo increases, snow mass density decreases, snow composite grain radius decreases, a...
متن کاملFissarcturus walteri sp. nov. from the Ross Sea of the Southern Ocean (Isopoda, Antarcturidae).
During the Victoria-Land Transect project two specimens of a new species, Fissarcturus walteri sp. nov., were found in the Ross Sea along the Victoria Land Coast, Antarctica, during the 19th Italica expedition in February 2004. This is the second species of Fissarcturus from the Ross Sea after F. rossi Brandt, 2007. F. walteri sp. nov. is most similar to Fissarcturus granulosus (Nordenstam, 193...
